We were all given some wonderful gifts. It's nice to be appreciated. I have around 10 BD's so far. Prices seem to fluctuate and especially via Amazon. Once a film has been out for a month the prices drop dramatically. Cinema tickets, hmm, I haven't been to the cinema for so long!
I don't really see the point with my Home Cinema setup though I would like to go and experience Dolby Atmos at some point. Hoping my neighbour will be out tonight so I can watch Need for Speed nice and loud, the sound track on this movie is astonishing in 7.
Looks like we think alike in several ways: I like owning a BD, too, so that I can watch it over and over if it's good, anyway lol and I like watching with the sound up!!! Surround sound is awesome!!! Never knew what I was missing til I got it! Even without a center channel speaker or subwoofer, it still sounds great! Using my Sony receiver, of course! Second one I've had - first one stopped working - would play for about ten minutes then quit! Too expensive to fix - if anybody even fixes them any more, besides sending them back to Sony - so got a new one - with HDMI inputs which work great with my Sony TV and other components Last film I saw in a theater was "Unbroken" - pretty good, too!
Only thing I know about Atmos is that it was in an episode of "Doctor Who" lol Probably not the same thing, though, since THAT Atmos cleaned all the pollution from car exhaust lol Of course, it was actually a plot by the Sontarans to make earth their breeding planet lol Hope I didn't spoil the episode for you lol My BD of "Catching Fire" has Dolby DTS - gotta hit the mute button for the promo or I think the promo for that will blow out my speakers!
Take care! Glad to know Sony appreciates you! Click the little black envelope icon at the top of the screen just below 'Register Your Product'. Hope to hear from you soon. Tonycv51, I'm not the original OP of this post although I have been communicating with him off-line. I'll let him know you've replied in case he hasn't seen it yet.
I have to say that I'm intrigued by your solution, can I ask.. This could explain the reason why it works when removing the Network Cable, presumably because the disc can no longer access the BD Live features. You would think that turning OFF the BD Live content would have been sufficient though, perhaps after doing this you needed to restart the player? Sony do make mention of BD Live Content as one of the causes of disc malfunction and recommend deleting any conflicting data from the USB memory, I guess BD Live features are not worth the hassle given the problems people experience.
Of course some people might find removing the LAN cable to be a right pain in the proverbial's if they have to do it each time they want to watch the film!! Thanks for sharing your ideas, I'm sure ekenne will be relieved he wasn't the only person to suffer this problem. Many thanks!
This was so bad that the disc was still unwatchable until connection was severed. You make a good point in your last paragraph.. Of course these players also have Cinavia Protection which most likely accesses the internet though also. I guess not being connected to the internet might prove to be a uesful trick in such circumstances. Thanks for your reply with your analysis and possible solution! I'll definitely give your suggested remedy a try, probably this weekend. I do have my BD player connected to Internet via Ethernet, so this solution may help.
I did, however, still experience the problem with BD Live turned off and parental controls also turned off. I don't recall seeing anything in settings for Gracenote, though, so I'll have to check on that, too, next time I try to play this disc. As I mentioned, mine plays most of the 20th CF fanfare, goes black for awhile then an animated 20th CF logo comes on screen, starts to play the trailers but, after maybe five seconds, quits. I'm sorry to hear of your problems, but a little relieved to know I'm not completely alone in experiencing this problem with ONLY this disc!
Without him, I probably would have given up on this a long time ago and just chalked it up to a bad experience. Thanks, again, to both of you for your help and I'll let you know if this solution worked for me! By all means recommend me for the title if you like! Just to refresh your memory and those who've joined part way through this thread the issue was with slow panned shots of the camera either left or right within the scene. I have now discovered that this problem is quite common if a film is shot in 24 fps frames per second.
I'm no expert on this subject but from what I read apparently films are generally shot at 24 fps for the cinema. The technology is also very ancient and was first used as far back as the 's, apparently. Again according to what I read, when playing a 24 fps film back via a BD Player it does some conversion to reduce this issue and somehow blur the motion, however it seems this doesn't happen in reality. Of course I'm only stating what I can remember reading so don't take this too literally.
I might have misunderstood the explanation myself. Thanks, again, for the help! Keep me updated if you find any more information or a solution that hasn't been tried P.
I just saw that my new avatar was approved!! Hope you all like it - and know what it is! It's a tardis! Sorry to hear the solution mentioned earlier didn't work for you.. Personally I'm at a loss as to what to suggest next.. Beam me up Scotty! Oops sorry wrong programme!! I just wanted to update those of you who are currently experiencing difficulties playing 'The Maze Runner' on Blu-ray. I bought this movie yesterday here in the UK Region B to test if this issue effects all Sony players.
Fortunately not it would seem.. Other than that the sound was certainly very good and this is the first movie I've bought which is encoded with 7. I appreciate this is of no consolation to those of you who cannot successfully play this movie but it does rather suggest that the issue is with the players as opposed to the blu-ray discs themselves. Perhaps a firmware update will fix this issue, I can't say for sure.
On the subject of an earlier post that I made, I'm still awaiting a reply from 20th Century Fox about this issue presently and have today sent them a reminder asking for some much needed feedback. Yes I like to go the extra mile for my American friends, I hope Sony recognise me for my efforts!! Yes the 7. If my living space allowed me to do so I would have installed the to extra speakers at the rear giving me four surround channels.
I think this is where 7. I know we've pondered the various reasons why the movie doesn't play on some models but I think as you discovered it's likely to be model specific.
No doubt when Sony launch new models the firmware gets a re-write and so newer models can play newer discs. Possibly in a year or so I might be in the same position as you and find discs that won't work. It's a shame Sony lets it's valuable customers down like this, products should be expected to last their lifetime and not just until the warranty expires. Somehow I don't think they'll release an update for your device, it seems Sony want us to continually upgrade which is ironic for a company that openly proclaims to support green initiatives.
So much for reducing waste!! I hadn't noticed your model line-up was different in the US, that is strange! Yes I liked the movie btw, I had seen it before but was interested in testing the 7.
Has part two of the movie released in the US yet? I'm guessing that the helicopter that flew them away at the end of the first movie crash lands in yet another maze!! Cheers indeed, good health get another round in governor and don't forget the pork scratchings! Anyway, less about me! I recall you saying that this disc is the only one causing you issues so no need to rush out and buy something new, unless of course it bothers you! I might have mentioned further up this thread that April is the best month to buy last years models.
Retailers are clearing their stocks right about now to make way for this years product range. Bargains on last years stock are plentiful in April. The 3D side of things I'd forgotten about to be honest, I don't like 3D stuff. Give me a nice 4K TV any day and I'd be happy.
I have been waiting to buy a player for hopes of seeing the update come out but I am running out of patients that it will even happen. I have read other posts about Sony saying "that's as good as it gets". Is this true? Is that as good as its going to get??? A post from someone I assume is a Sony employee said "Sony Engineers are working on an update to improve the Netflix Application on all Sony products with Netflix streaming capability". But what does that specifically mean?
Does that just mean a better stream with less choppiness or are they actually working to bring it up to the standard on the interface that the competition has deemed Standard for a product i.
All in all, I think the costumer base including me is reading that Sony has to address this issue along with a few others that exist but are in no hurry to do so or they just don't even want to say what they are working on or when they think they will release the update.
I speak for myself And possibly others when I say I am disappointed in Sony about this issue and am going to buy another brand soon if this isn't addressed. I'm going to jump on the bandwagon with this one.
I thought "how bad can it really be? I don't think I can handle the poor Netflix support. It's bad enough that you can't browse or search for titles, but the movie art images are so small that I can barely read them. I would really prefer to have fewer movies on screen at one time and be able to see the box art at a decent resolution. I'd really like to know if this is going to be fixed before my return deadline. Aside from the streaming issues, I like the player so far.
I have a BDP-N which is a terrific blu-ray player. However, the Netflix streaming issue is a disappointment. Nearly every forum I visited praises this player but complains about the streaming issue.
The new network patch Vers. I'm not at the "I'm taking this thing back to the store" stage yet, but Sony needs to take the concerns raised in this forum seriously and promptly address this issue. If your competitors have fixed this problem, what is Sony's issue. Come on guys I've had several Sony blu players from first generation to present. Color not currently supported by either DVD or Blu-ray , as well as component video and composite video.
Audio connections are limited to TosLink, digital coaxial, and analog stereo. When people are first exposed to Blu-ray, the picture quality generally blows them away—as it should—but the improved audio is just as impressive.
There are four icons Setup, Photo, Video, and Network , each with subheadings that have various options. Strangely, Sony lists all of the Network channels under Video, not Network. In order to activate Netflix, you must register the player with Sony first a two-step process.
Search form Search. As a a subscriber I have asked Love-films for replacement rental BD discs for the particular problem movie BD and even the replacements suffer from the same problem I have had about 3sets of disks all failing.
In an attempt to see if if the problem was with the Lovefilm rental disks, I tried some of my own - shop bought - BD discs and they are starting to suffer the same way. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Just as a footnote it plays DVD's with no problems at all!
Disney claims that I need an upgrade to my out-of-date anti-piracy software " BD disks getting about halfway thru a movie and then the picture freezes" I have found the easiest solution Buy new cheap phillips blu-ray player. Problem solved. I have gone through your post and tried everything you suggested and nothing works.
When I load the disc, a message comes up that is shadowed on the screen i. This message remains on the screen but the audio starts to play the previews and trailers that are on the disc.
So, the audio seems to be working but there is no video. If I hit the Menu button, the music changes to the theme song of the movie on the disc, at least it does for Cars, which means I should be at the main menu of the movie. But, again, no video on the screen, other than the shadowed message, so I can't confirm. I know for a FACT that all of these discs will play because I have played them multiple times in my Toshiba laptop drive, which is about 4 years old. I bought this particular Sony because it had some features that I wanted like network connectivity, Pandora, etc.
I never thought to check and see if it would actually play a Blu-Ray disc So, do I just return it and try another brand or do you guys have a suggestion for something I haven't tried? Please ask Sony to address this issue. Anyway I think that my system was already updated with that firmware at the first time I came across with this problem. Just to let you be acquainted with. Update to my last on this string. That is the good news. For what it is worth I called Somy back to reconfirm what they stated about them working the problem.
They reassured me that they were. So I wait with my S unable to play a growing list of Disks. Come on Sony!!! Time to address the issue and inform your customers what the status is. Sadly a trip to the repair center would be to no avail as this problem seems to be growing by the day and is not limited to your unit. Really Sony. Come on??? Information would be nice? And they are talking about this issue as long as 1 year before! I have purchased two Sony Blu Ray players within a month and have the same problem when the firmware updates.
I have the Rocky Blu Ray box set and discs 4, 5 and the Balboa movie do not play. But the other three movies work fine. I have checked the Blu Rays on another player and they are fine. The firmware was already updated before I bought the movies. The movies never loaded on that player. It did play one of the Rocky movies earlier today. Then I updated the software to the current version M Now only some of the movies from the box set will play.
Yes I did try all the repair steps recomended on this site several times. Nothing worked on either player. I have been a loyal sony customer since the s when I bought my first tv. I have also recomended Sony to many friends and family. My confidence in the Sony brand is now shaken and I hope this issue is resolved before I need to return this Blu Ray player.
I have the same problem with some of my Blu Rays. I took one model back and got a different Sony model. Same problem with the second one after the firmware updated. Glad I bought it at Costco. For real? I don't know what to do, I want see my movies, I'm desperate, Sony we really need your help.
I have a 1. Try checking your display settings on the home menu. Even though my tv is P it wouldn't work with 24P set to auto. Changed this setting and no more issues with BD. Very quick loading. Love it.
BDP-S Rev The bad thing about the BDP-S is that it doesn't have a graceful way of handling DVDs with a format it cannot handle: it just sits there, trying to load it.
You have to do the "restart trick" to eject the thing. Sony, you guys could please release an update. There are some new discs that are not playing at all. New firmware update please! Im almost buying one of the Pioneers player Same thing was happening to me with American Ganster Good Luck.
So here is what I found when mine froze up: I could not get the home screen or player to load anything. I tried the flash drive. I also called Sony, coming to this forum was their idea of help. If i can help you choose to return your product, thatsbless stressful than keeping it; given a choice, I will NEVER buy another Sony product. They are directly connected through an HDMI cable that has been tested with other devices and works fine.
I have also tried it with another HDMI cable with the same results. It stays that way. Anyone know how to fix this? If you are not able to pull up bluray menu then you may need to connect the player to another TV to do the settings adjustments since this bluray model is not capable of composite or component cable connection. If my post answers your question, please mark it as "Accepted Solution".
The player has been stellar in terms of PQ, and in every other way. I have the most up to date firmware installed. Oddly enough, can only play discs 2 and 3.
Disc one hangs at the C log and will not load. I cannot figure this out. Thinking that I had gotten a defective disc, I returned the set to Barnes and Noble, and lo and behold, same issue. Could this be a defective batch of discs? I reset the machine by unplugging it for several minutes and still does not load, only hangs at Criterion logo.
Any suggestions? Should I contact criterion? I find it odd that only disc one, from TWO different sets, will not play. This is a step by step guide to fix ur problem Unplug your sony unit and place in basement. You can try resetting the player to its factory default settings.
Follow the steps below: 1. Select All Settings and then click Start. Once its done, turn off the player and turn it back on. Complete the initial setup and easy setup. Try playing the disc again. If that does not resolve the issue, try other BD discs other than the ones from Criterion.
If other discs plays fine then it's an issue with the disc. If my post answers your question, please mark it as an "Accepted Solution. I took it back to where i bought and it plays on their TV.
I can hear sound but no picture and TV screen shows the following "unsupported signal. Please check the device output. Pls Help i need some help thanks. Please, check that the cables are properly connected in the back of the tv. If you have a second set of cables test them out. Sometimes it might be the cables that could be causing the problem. It's more aggravation than it's worth. Hi Gandalf! Please follow this link if you are unable to play Blu-ray Disc movie.
You saved me time, gas money, and the stress of having to take it back to the store. I've tried everything listed and was about to give up. I registered on this site just to say thanks. Hi Atxguy! Thanks for taking time to let us know chop's troubleshooting steps also worked on your end.
I have a BDP-S It worked for a while. Then gradually started having problems reading some Blu Ray disks. The problem has progressed to the point where it can't operate most BD disks, even ones I've watched before on this player.
Sometimes ejecting the disk a bunch of times works. I work in IT, try-this-try-that means you have not clue what the problem is. Figure out a fix or start refunding peoples hard earned money SONY. Hi sgoodwi3! For us to further assist you, please provide more information.
Are you getting any error message when you try playing Blu-ray discs? If yes, please provide the exact error. Also, what is the current software version of the player? Last week, when I turned it on, it asked for an update then I did.
Now, it cannot play any disc it used to paly well. I used every trick you posted in here and reset a couple of time too.
Every time I put a disc in, the player showes "empty" What is going on? Is it dead? Hi kevinliang! Please try the troubleshooting steps i posted on this thread. If my post answers your question, please mark it as "Accept as Solution".
I have a BDP-S player. I have had it a couple years, but just recently started having trouble playing some of the newer BluRay disks like Fast and Furious 6.
I have been able to play everything since I made that change. Thanks to everyone who posted the helpful tips. Thank you for sharing your solution, gameofyou! Worked on my player too for Despicable-me2 Thanks. Good job. I have begun experiencing the same problem. I have followed the resettiing instructions as well as the the information listed in the help pages "Unable to play a Blu-ray Disk movie".
I have a BDPS that has been fantastic up until this week. Based upon the help page, I have updated my firmware to version I have since reset my system to factory settings and made sure that the BD Internet Connection is "Do not allow". I can not play about half of my disks.
Some of these would play in the past but will no longer play. Hi OprahtheHutt! Based on what is happening on your Blu-ray player, it appears that the unit is for service. Thank you for the quick diagnosis and recommendation. That would be smart decision, OprahtheHutt! THIS fixed my issue.
It would play some BD but not a new release. Thank you for letting us know, joejoseph. I have the BDP-S model which was working fine playing blu-rays and normal dvd's for some time. Last week, we rented two new blu-rays from the DVD shop and they would not play, so I updated the firmware via the internet.
The version is M No blu-rays, no dvd's, nothing. You put a disk in, you hear a whirring sound but the screen does not change and does not show that a disk has been loaded. This is the first and last time I will purchase a Sony product.
I have had Panasonic and Samsung products without any issues - ever. Very disappointed Sony. Hi samboss! Based on the information you gave, the Blu-ray player needs service. I tried renting Reds 2 this weekend and it wouldn't play. It said "Failure" on the face of the Blu ray then it displayed an error message saying the disc could not be read. I tried cleaning the disc. It is connected to wifi and auto updates, so I have the latest update.
I also have never used the parental controls so they are not on. I pretty much cannot rent Blu rays because they don't play. I haven't had a Blu ray work that I've rented in a long time. The Blu ray's that I've purchased work, just not the rentals. Hi coyoteroy77! Do a Factory Reset. Using the supplied remote, press the Home button. Go to Setup. Under Setup, select Resetting. Select All Settings. If the player goes off after the factory reset, just turn it back on and the Easy Setup will be displayed on the screen.
But if the player does not turn off just go back to the Setup Menu then go to Easy Setup. Just follow the on-screen prompts to finish the Initial Setup of the player. Tr y playing the disc again. I wont buy a Sony ever again. Hi phatterplatter! What is the model number of your Blu-ray player? Click this link to get additional information on how to find your model number?
Thanks for your quick reply. Thank you for the information! Have tried doing a factory reset on the player? If not yet, please follow the steps provided above. Also, is the issue happening on all the Blu-ray discs, including those that worked before? Factory reset was performed. ALL Blueray discs fail.
Thanks for your reply again. Based on the information you provided, it appears that your Blu-ray player needs service. Service will cost more than the player Thanks anyways. Tried it. Didn't work. It shows a disc with a question mark and name as "unknown" The error message says, "Unable to play this disc. Please check: Is the disc in a format playable by this unit? Is the disc clean with no scratches or fingerprints. It is a rented disc from Hastings.
You mentioned you are getting error message. Do you get this error when you play other discs? What is the title of the movie you are trying to play? Also, please provide the model number of the player. Tried all steps covered in the troubleshooting guide, and spoke with a customer service rep as well. The other option was to wait for the next software update, but she didn't know when that would be. Also, the Blu Ray disks I have already been played, and now are listed as invalid.
Disks I already own, and have worked in the past. I'm having the same problem on my BDP-S Firmware says it's all updated, reset to factory settings, turned off the player and unplugged for over a minute and it still won't play any of my blu-rays,new or old, but will play DVDs just fine. I get the disc with the question mark in it that says unknown for all Blu-ray Discs. Regular DVDs are still playing fine, but it won't play blue-rays that it had previously played perfectly.
Already tried all of the described troubleshooting steps without success. It seems this is a general hardware issue with current Sony BD-players. Any final suggestions? I've had mine for 2 years and never had a problem til this week. Seems to me that if Sony players across the board, new models and older models, are having the same problem, now not playing discs they've previously played or any new discs, but will play any other media format, then its a firmware issue and they need to release a patch or a new update.
Otherwise they're going to be losing a lot of customers to other manufacturers that aren't having this issue, I'm already shopping around in case they don't resolve it ASAP. Hi everyone!
If after following troubleshooting steps provided on this thread the issue persist, then that would mean your Blu-ray player needs service. BrainP, it is easy to say that, but I have spent a lot of money on Sony products, and was once a loyal customer, until now.
It appears that there is an issue with Sony's Blu Ray players. Not only have I seen these issues on your own community site, but non Sony supported home electronic forums. Social media has become a powerful tool to consumers. Please offer a solution to this problem. Asking us to contact customer service, as I have already done, has not offered any solution to this problem. As I stated in earlier in this subject area.
Can you give some insight as to what the problem may be. Once again, nothing but an insult. I still fail to see how ALL our players need service when we all have different models and they're all different ages yet they're all having the exact same problem at the exact same time, what's the common denominator? If they were all the same model, or the same age sure, but none of them that I've seen on this board are the same as the next.
If that's the only answer that Sony is gonna come up with to this issue, which is a non-solution, then I guess they just lost a customer. Sad, because up to this point I really liked this product. And IF we are all running the same firmware which seems much more likely to me than all of our player coincidently breaking all at the same time and that's really the issue, I know for me all they'd have to say is we've identified the problem and are working on a fix, or that they're working on identifying the issue.
But as they don't seem to be trying I'll work on identifying a new brand of player to buy to replace this sony. BrianP, many thx for your quick response. Can you shed some more light on this issue? Is there yet any kind of official information from Sony about the cause s of this issue?
The thing is, I am not very happy and willing to spend my time and effort on disassembling and later reassembling the whole theater system tall speakers, cables,.. Is that really all Sony do for customer satisfaction? Hi drewski and eekmcbride! Since the discs are showing invalid and they have exhausted available troubleshooting service is required.
Hi FelixNs! Unfortunately, we are unable to assist customers outside of the US. What is the schedule to patch fix this update? That's what I've been trying to say since I first posted, that it's the firmware update. They just keep telling me I need service.
